Beach rules

Beach rules

Swimming

strandSwimming is permitted along the entire North Sea beach, except for a stretch between posts 31 and 33, because of the strong current between Texel and Vlieland. It is not permitted to take air beds and the likes into the sea. Do not go any deeper than waist-height.

Dogs

Hond Dogs should among others be kept leashed on the guarded parts of the beach and on the nudist beach near Den Hoorn and De Cocksdorp. There are some parts where dogs are allowed on the beach without leash.

Horse riding

Horse riding on the beach is an exhilarating experience. Fee the wind in your hair as your horse gallops through the surf. Planning on riding on the beach yourself? There are two important factors to be aware of: the time of day when you are allowed on the beach and the tide times.

Horse riding and horse and carts are allowed on the whole Texel beach in the winter period; from the 1st of October until the 1st of May.
In the summer period; from the 1st of May until the 1st of October, horses are only permitted on specially allocated parts of the beach ("recreational beach" and "sports beach"), from sunrise until 10.00 and from 19.00 until sunset.

Horse riding on the beach is the best at low tide, when you can gallop to your heart's content over the wide beach. See the information signs at the beach (entrances) for any (temporary) regulations.

Campfire

Campfires are prohibited on the entire island of Texel. It is permitted to barbecue at the specially designated barbecue area in the woods. You will find this location along the Randweg in De Dennen (Staatbosbeheer woods). The barbecue area can be reached by car from the Ruyslaan in De Koog. Bring your own charcoal and other requisites. Barbecuing on other locations in the woods or on the beach is not permitted.

What is allowed and what's not?

StrandbewakingIt is forbidden to enter the sea with floating objects such as air beds, water rings, etc. Everyone is kindly requested to follow the instruction of the lifeguards. The lifeguards can be recognised by their orange shirts with the text Strandbewaking Texel.

Overnight

It is forbidden to spend the night in campers or caravans on car parks. Camp sites on Texel have special places for campers.

Fire

It is forbidden to make an open fire on the beach.

Catamaran-sailing

Kiting

Kites on a beach are beautiful things to see. Kiting is also a fun activity. You are allowed to use a one-line kite everywhere. Vliegeren On three parts of the beach you are also allowed to kite with navigable kites (kites that have two or more lines): between 10.93 and 11.68 near Den Hoorn, between 21.31 and 22.51 (near De Koog) and between 28.40 and the breakwater (De Cocksdorp). From a safety point of view, and in order to limit the inconvenience for other people, you are not allowed to fly your kite on the other parts of the beach. The parts of the beach where kiting is prohibited are marked by signs.

Tips for kiting safely.

Always make sure that you only fl y your kite when you are certain that you are able to control it at that wind force. Keep your distance from other kiters and onlookers within a reach of 180 degrees. Never kite with lines longer than 100 m, or 45 m for stunt kites. And always respect the other people on the beach.
