Blue Flags

The beaches on Texel are pristine and were awarded with four 'Blue Flags', the quality mark. The 4 flags were planted along the North Sea coastline of Texel near Den Hoorn, De Koog and De Cocksdorp. The Blue Flag is the international symbol for clean beaches with good facilities and accessibility.

Besides, the Texel marina, ‘Waddenhaven Texel', was awarded a Blue Flag because of the high level of the facilities, the safety and the quality of the environment. The quality mark Blue Flag has been presented in the Netherlands by the ANWB, on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), since 1987.

Facilities

As well as the excellent quality of the water for swimming along the Texel coast, the facilities available to beachgoers are also in good shape: the beaches are clean, the sanitary facilities are good, all areas are supervised by lifeguards during the bathing season, the beaches are easy to reach and parking facilities are abundant (and free). Six of the nine beach sections (Posts 9, 12, 15, 17, 20 and 28) have facilities for the disabled: parking spaces, sanitary facilities, beach wheelchairs and a concrete path and/or a runway down to the waterline.

What does the Blue Flag stand for?

The Blue Flag Campaign in the Netherlands involves public authorities, businesses and holidaymakers in caring for clean and safe water, attractive natural surroundings and a healthy environment.

International symbol

The Blue Flag is an international form of recognition for the efforts made by coastal resorts and marina owners. To tourists and holidaymakers, the Blue Flag is the international symbol for clean beaches and marinas.

Criteria

Blue Flag designation is valid for one year. Each year the beaches and marinas are inspected to ensure they still meet the requirements. The international jury may designate a Blue Flag following national nomination. The international allocation of the Blue Flag is carried out by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an independent environmental organization. In the Netherlands the Blue Flag Campaign is run by the ANWB on behalf of FEE-Nederland.

Some of the criteria which the beaches are required to fulfill are:

  • Excellent quality of swimming waters
  • Clean beach
  • Proper sanitary and refuse facilities
  • Proper facilities for disabled persons
  • A high level of safety
  • Good accessibility
  • The organization of nature and environmental activities
