Bird Island
Texel is known as an island where many bird species occur. This is mainly thanks to the location of the island on the north-western coast of Europe, exactly in the trajectory of many migratory birds. Most birds do not like flying over the sea and follow the coastline for as long as possible.
Abundant source of food
Texel's location on the Waddensea, an abundant source of food, makes the island extra attractive to many birds. Some of the birds remain on Texel all year long, there is also a group of birds that only comes to nest.
For this reason the green walking routes are open from 1st September until 1st March.
