De Hoge berg

Of the boulder clay mounds from the ice age, the Hoge Berg is most distinctive. The highest point of the Hoge Berg lies at 15.3 metres above N.A.P. The villages of Den Hoorn, De Waal, Den Burg and Oosterend are also situated on such boulder clay emergences. De Hoge Berg lies between Den Burg and Oudeschild and to the west of the hill lies the Memorial Cemetery Hoge Berg Texel dedicated to the Georgians who died on the island during the Second World War.Google maps: Hoge Berg Nationaal Park
The 'old land'
In the past, the 'old land' was characterised by the presence of ‘stolp' farms, garden walls and sheep pens. During the land consolidation in the fifties, many of these typical Texel elements disappeared. On a large part of Texel, they occur sporadically. Especially on the Hoge Berg, these elements of the landscape have been mostly preserved or even laid out again.
Landscape reserve and insect reserve
Due to the importance of the Hoge Berg area to the landscape, it is not surprising that this area was designated landscape reserve in 1968. On the Hoge Berg you will also find De Zandkuil, the only insect reserve in the Netherlands. The vegetation on the slopes of this Zandkuil is ideal for the digger bees and wasps that live there.
The Hogeberg is also the name of the only secondary school on the island which is located at the foot of the Hoge Berg.
