Culinary delights on Texel
Culinary delights on Texel
Texel has countless culinary delights to offer. Honest food, skilfully produced on the island with emphasis for quality and respect for the environment. Products such as the world famous Texel lamb, sheep's cheese and herbal bitters, super fresh asparagus, fish, prawns and delicious oysters. No wonder that top chefs on the island feel inspired to create surprising new creations!
Culinary Texel
A great way to get to know the local specialities is by visiting one of Texel's food events, such as ‘Texel Culinair', which takes place every year in De Koog in the second week of September. A completely d
ifferent kind of chef can be found at the fish smoking competitions which are held in the fisherman's village of Oosterend in the autumn. They prepare their exquisite specialities on hand built smoking barrels.
The best place to eat fresh fish is of course the harbour of Oudeschild. The fish restaurants in the harbour offer fantastic views of the fishing boats arriving on a Friday after a week at sea.
Sheep farming island
Texel has been known as a sheep farming island since the 15th century. There are still just as many sheep as people on Texel: nearly 14,000. Tens of thousands of lambs add to this number in the spring.
Texel lamb is renowned for its special 'pré salé' taste. The brackish soil and salty sea air makes the meat of lambs from the Texel meadows naturally lightly salted. A real treat for foodies. Texel lamb is always on the menu when Queen Beatrix holds a meal for foreign heads of state.
The leaflet "Echt Texelse Producten" (real products of Texel) is available at the office of VVV Texel (tourist information).

Good food
Good food can be found in each of the seven villages on the island. The best restaurants on Texel are keen to make use of the abundance of local quality products. The chefs seem to be able to create exciting new combinations with ease. This earns various restaurants a place in the annual preference listings in culinary magazines.
