Adjustments in nature

Look-out points

The entrance to De Slufter is accessible via a gently sloping path over the dunes. There is a matted path in the Slufter itself, making the gully alongside the Slufterbollen accessible. It is possible to borrow a beach wheelchair at the restaurant in order to further explore the area. The look-out point at the end of de Oorsprongweg at the northern end of De Slufter is also accessible, although this slope is rather steep. Google maps:  De Slufter

Aanpassingenindenatuur_natuurpadA look-out point has been constructed at the entrance to de Horsmeertjes, which offers views over the southernmost tip of the island. The look out point is also suitable for disabled visitors, due to its width. It can accommodate nine wheelchairs at a time. The path to the look out point is 140 metres long with a slope of 1:20. There are various resting places at which wheelchair users can pass one another. Google Maps: Hors

The look-out point at de Geulplas on de Mokweg has also been made accessible for the disabled. Google Maps: Geulplas

The look-out point on de Kampeersnol at het Turfveld on the edge of the woods is accessible by a 65 metre long shell path with a slope of 1:20. The path is one and a half metres wide and has a handrail. The look out point itself has an area of 8 x 8 metres. Google Maps: Kampeersnol

Accessible footpaths

The footpaths in de Alloo (Google maps: Alloo), the dune area between Ecomare and De Koog, are suitable for motorized wheelchairs. This also applies to the footpath from Loodsmansduin to the beach at Paal 9 (Google maps) and the footpath at de Bleekersvallei (Google maps: Bleekersvallei). Here visitors have to partly use the cycle path instead of the path on the edge of the woods. Motorized wheelchair users can use the ‘kissing gates', which are designed to deter cyclists, by reversing in.

Nature trips

Covered wagon ‘De Jan Plezier'
On the horse drawn covered wagon ‘De Jan Plezier' there are facilities for the less-able. In this way everybody can enjoy the beautiful environment and visit places which are otherwise inaccessible. There is an easy step up onto the wagon and a wheelchair lift. Wheelchairs are then securely fastened. We ask visitors to state if they will be travelling with a wheelchair upon booking as a few benches can then be removed from the wagon.

Specially adapted boats
It is also possible to take a trip on a shrimp fishing boat. On the boat you can experience shrimp fishing and seal watching.
The following shrimp fishing boats are suitable for the less-able: TX10 Emmie and  TX44 (pushed wheelchairs only).

Bird watching from the roadside

It is possible to watch birds from the roadside at the following places:

  • The pools at the foot of the dyke to the north of Oudeschild (Ottersaat, maps).
  • The 'Wagejot'  (Wagejot, maps), a pool between the old and new dyke near Oosterend.
  • 'De Bol', from the dyke to the north of Oost (with stunning view across de Wadden sea). Google maps: De Bol.
  • The roads de Staart and Westerboersweg at the polder 'Waalenburg' , Google maps.
  • The 'Mokbaai' with views of de 'Geul', where spoonbills breed Google map, De Geul
