Ecomare

A visit to Texel is incomplete without seeing the seals. This is possible up-close at Ecomare. But be careful, although they look adorable, stroking them is not advised. Seals are predators, with real dogs teeth, as the seal keeper will tell you. During the feeding time talk the keeper will tell you all about the characteristics of the different seals and about the ideals of Ecomare, the oldest seal sanctuary in Europe.
Take plenty of time for your visit as there is plenty more to see at Ecomare than the seals. You can for instance learn where the boulders on the Texel beaches come from and how Texel originated in the ice age. Glaciers left solid mounds of loam behind which formed hills such as de Hoge Berg. The diverse sea aquaria and their inhabitants are also recommended. www.ecomare.nl
