Fishing

It is permitted to fish along the entire Texel coast without a permit or license, provided no more than two rods are used. Out of consideration towards people engaging in recreational activities, such as swimming and sunbathing, fishermen are encouraged to cast their rods at the unsupervised beaches. The beach between Paal 9 and Paal 15 is an adequate fishing beach, as there are very few other people. Different types of fish are caught in the North Sea, especially flat fish, the odd seabass and sea eal, and when the time is right, codd.

Between Paal 12 and Paal 17, several wave breakers are in place to protect the Texel shores. These dyke shaped breakers are a popular spot for fishermen wanting to fish further out at sea. Needlefish, and on hotter days mackerels, are often caught around here.  The beach between Westerslag (Paal 15) and Paal 21 is the most frequented beach by tourists.

One of the best fishing spots has to be around Paal 28. Here, needlefish and mackerel are reeled in regularly, as well as any other fish that lives in the Texel waters. Onshore wind forms particularly great catching conditions. On the northernmost part of the island, where the Cocksdorp lighthouse is, fishing is less suitable due to strong currents around the point.

However, at neap tide, some fishermen do venture out. Two nature reserves, "De Muy" and "De Slufter", are naturally situated between Paal 22 and Paal 27. Apart from the foreshore, fishing isn't permitted in these areas.

Fishing on any inland water on Texel requires a fishing license. Licenses can be purchased from VVV Texel Tourist Information Centre and from Mr Hottentot, address: Vuurtorenweg 66, De Cocksdorp. Phone 0222-316526.

Digging for worm bait is permitted on the mudflats. Only for personal use and using a pitchfork. The Texel Council has the right to temporarily close off areas to protect foraging migratory birds for the length of the breeding season.
