If you would like to know more about this amazing showpiece from the Palmhout shipwreck, come and admire it at Museum Kaap Skil.
Some years ago, a unique collection of archaeological objects was discovered in the Wadden Sea and recently a silver chalice with a gilt finish was found among them. The chalice had been buried under the sand at the bottom of the sea for around 400 years. Just like the famous “Dress”, this showpiece comes from a centuries-old shipwreck in the Wadden Sea just off the coast of Texel.
The chalice has been skillfully restored and is now on display; it can be viewed from all sides in a specially-made, climate-controlled case. The goblet is decorated with raised flower patterns and mascarons —ornaments that represent faces.
This exceptional find can be seen in the exhibition “Showpiece from the Palmwood Wreck” at Museum Kaap Skil until 3 November 2019.
