Explore Texel’s mudflats

14 January 2018

Even if you spend several days on Texel, you won’t have time to be bored. You can bike, walk, shop or dine out. Enjoy our beaches, dunes, polders and wildlife areas. Cuddle the lambs, look for rare birds, visit a museum or jump out of a plane ... there almost too much to choose from!

Tips for unusual outings on Texel’s mudflats

And that’s not all! Texel’s eastern coast – where the island borders on the Wadden Sea – is relatively quiet, although our island’s mudflat coast is certainly worth exploration.

Here are three tips for unusual outings to help you explore Texel’s mudflats:

1. Watching seals

Het Sop, the TX25, TX10, De Vrijheid, TX44 and TX20 Walrus, which sail from Oudeschild, offer trips that take you to the sandbanks in the Wadden Sea, which are favourite places for seals. Often, these creatures are very curious and are brave enough to swim close to the boats.

2. Gathering oysters

Oysters are there for the picking on Texel’s mudflats; you only need to know where to look. Texel’s oyster man Martin leads excursions to the best oyster spots along the Wadden Dyke. And then, of course, you’ll have the opportunity to sample the oysters, accompanied by a glass of bubbly. It’s certainly a pleasurable way of passing your time in the Wadden Sea region.

3. The RIB experience

RIBs are Rigid Inflatable Boats: seaworthy, inflatable boats with a moulded bottom and sides that are filled with air. Equipped with one or more powerful motors, these RIBs become highly manoeuvrable speedboats. On Texel, you can take a trip on these powerboats, which take up to 10 passengers and race with 350 HP across the mudflats. It’s a unique experience.
