The wait is almost over. Around the summer of 2019, Texel will have a new nature reserve! The Prins Hendrik sand dike is currently being built in the south of Texel. The construction of this dike creates an impressive 200-hectare new nature reserve on the Wadden Sea side of Texel.
Until now, there were only dunes on the west side of the island. But a new dune area is being created on the Wadden Sea side. This will ensure that the Prins Hendrik polder will also have a safe dike in the future. And that means that we will have dry feet for some time to come!
The new nature reserve looks set to attract all kinds of wading birds, but sticklebacks and shrimps will no doubt also find their way to it.
From mid-2019, you will be able to explore the new nature reserve by bike. A new cycle track will be laid through the dunes and across the dike. There will also be a new walking trail, which will run partly through the new dune area, with access to the birdwatching station. This walking trail will link up beautifully with the existing 1 km trail around the Ceres nature reserve.
During the works, you can already check out the construction of the dike. Have a look around the visitor centre at the top of the dike by the Prins Hendrik pumping station. At the visitor centre, you will enjoy spectacular views of the works and find out all about this special project. Or you could visit the temporary viewpoint at the nature reserve. Who knows, you may even spot seals!
From spring 2019, weekly project excursions will be organised. So you can watch the works from up close.
