Paddling away in a world record-breaking attempt on Texel

19 July 2016

A group of senior citizens from the Amsterdam-Noord district has been in training for weeks to break the world record for paddling, an event that will be held on Texel on Saturday 6 August.

Weekly training sessions

Every week, around 40 pensioners meet at a large paddling pool in their neighbourhood to practise. Although the whole thing started out as a joke, they are now taking it very seriously. The record will only be valid if the participants can sit on chairs in the water for 10 minutes. They have been practising different exercises, such as the “wave” and the kick-off, when everyone is to run into the water on a signal from an aeroplane.

Body & Brain Festival

The world record they are attempting break stands at 1,046. It was set in 2009 at Texel’s beach festival Body & Brain; this year’s edition of the festival will be held from 5 to 7 August. There is plenty to do in that weekend:

  • German Silva, who has won the New York Marathon twice, will be there to coach runners.
  • Luciano Hiwat, the winner of Move like Michael Jackson and the German show Got to Dance Kids will help you hone your dance moves
  • Henk Kraaijenhof (the former coach of famous sprinter Nelli Cooman) will give two lectures: “A high-performance lifestyle” and “Healthy aging without aches and pains”
  • The Four Horsemen will demonstrate their Extreme Trickz (a combination of martial arts, acrobatics and gymnastics)
  • Yoga
  • Dance
  • Capoeira

More information

The world record-breaking attempt is on Saturday 6 August at 3 p.m. in Texel’s beach at Pole no. 17 (Paal 17). Check out the program
