Wednesday, August 31 2022 300 years ago Jacob Roggeveen named an island in The Pacific Ocean Paasch Eyland. He had set out in 1721 with a fleet of three ships in search of a new continent, which he hoped to find between South America and Australia. A new continent - "The Unknown Southland" was not found and the last Dutch voyage of discovery went differently than was hoped and expected. The lecture is the historical part of the Easter Island/Texel year, which has taken shape with film screenings and ongoing exhibitions in and at De Eiland Galerij. Roelof van Gelder wrote the biography "Naar het Aards Paradijs", the book will be for sale that evening and will be signed by the author. Times: Walk-in: from 7:30 pm. Start: 8 pm. In the north of Texel, in the Eierlandse polder, close to De Slufter and De Muy, you can get acquainted with the work and world of the artist couple Niek Welboren and Kerstin Edelmann. In the Eiland Galerij, they present their drawings, paintings and ceramic objects in four atmospheric rooms and an organically designed sculpture garden. The coastal landscape is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for both artists. They each translate the timeless elements that surround the island: water, clouds, wind and currents in their own way in paint or clay. Niek Welboren incorporates his sketches and outdoor studies into small works on paper or paintings of a generous size. Space and movement are important features of his often abstracted island impressions. Kerstin Edelmann translates the shapes, colors and structures of the coastline into ceramic objects for indoor and outdoor use. The spiral, as a symbol of life, is the blue thread in her work. In addition to the presentation of island art - and art of islands - the school and polder history is honored in the monumental building with a fascinating collection in the Historisch Lokaal. The combination of: the art made on site, the meeting with the dedicated makers in their hand-designed “Art Island in the polder”, the special bond with Easter Island, the tangible history of the building and the soothing sculpture garden, can be called unique without a doubt. A visit to the Eiland Galerij, the longest existing exhibition space for art on Texel, is a surprising experience! The Island Gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm. An appointment can also be made for targeted studio visits outside opening hours. There is a stop in front of the door, safe parking is possible on site and on the Muyweg.
