Ascension Day on Texel

Ascension Day is always on a Thursday, 10 days before Whitsun and it is an official public holiday in the Netherlands and Belgium. On this day, Christians celebrate Jesus’ ascension to God, 39 days after rising from the dead.

Dauwtrappen in the spring

In the “olden days”, on Ascension Day, people would rise at three o’clock in the morning to go dancing and singing barefoot in the grass. This dauwtrappen or “dew-treading” is a very ancient custom. They believed that the dew on the grass had a purifying effect.
