Hoeksema & Van Kol samenwerkende architecten is a partnership between two independent architecture firms: Architectenbureau Tjaart Hoeksema on Texel and Stan van Kol Architect in Rotterdam. We met in the late nineties when we worked together at Wytze Patijn Architecten in Rotterdam. Our partnership came into being in the summer of 2006 and allows us to combine the broad range of knowledge and experience of a larger company with the versatility of a smaller one. And we love to express our criticism of each other’s work! Vision and methods Whether you want an extension, a house, a new office or a workshop, we think it essential to assess the future user’s preferences carefully. How does he or she regard the new accommodation? How can we make sure that the future user will feel at home in the new building? Can the user identify with the construction? To find out, we study the qualities of the location and the commission extensively. We love investigating this subject for every new commission. There’s no fixed recipe or method for a good design, but there are a few things we think are important: EmpathyWe start every design by learning about the context. In this sense, architecture requires empathy for, and understanding of, social, local, historic and town planning situations, the client and the user. Consequently, it is important to create support for a project, to build mutual trust between the parties involved and to acquire a feeling for the relationships and interests.
