Corona measures on Texel

New crowd control app for Texel

12 May 2020

Update November 2020: after a successful six months, the app can no longer be downloaded from mid-November. The already downloaded app will no longer be updated for the time being.

Holidays in your own country are gaining popularity due to the newly announced government measures. As one of the Netherlands' top holiday destinations, Texel expects to gradually welcome more visitors in the coming months. It is therefore important for residents and visitors that it is never too busy on the island.

TexelMap

VVV Texel will therefore launch the "TexelMap" app on 20 May. A system that manages capacity in popular locations and proactively applies controlled distribution across the island. Everyone can enjoy peace and space safely and responsibly. Something that Texel, as the largest Wadden island, has plenty to offer.

The TexelMap app is part of a larger master plan that is being rolled out this week. This plan is about the safe and responsible upscaling of the economy and tourist activities.

Collective support

Together with more than 150 local enterprising and social parties, including the Association of beach operators, Staatsbosbeheer, museums, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland, public transport, business associations and a growing number of entrepreneurs, the island jointly takes responsibility. In this way, the one-and-a-half meter society is proactively designed for its own business, as well as public spaces.

Frank Spooren, director of VVV Texel: “On behalf of all Texel people, we welcome our guests to our versatile island. With this AVG proof and free app we contribute to the opportunity to enjoy the island in a safe and responsible way. A progressive application within our tourism industry that we are proud of. But the app alone is not enough, every individual plays an important role in this. We therefore ask our residents and guests to explicitly follow the measures imposed by the government.”

How does TexelMap work?

The maximum safe capacity of each location has been mapped out in collaboration with the participating parties. The available capacity of all locations is visible at any time. When the capacity limit is reached, alternatives are offered. The app was developed by The Driving Force from Uithoorn, a specialist in visitor distribution solutions that helps make wise choices and encourages visitors to find quiet places.

The app is multilingual and can be downloaded for free from Wednesday 20 May in the App Store, Play Store or online at www.texelmap.nl.
