'In war and love'
Narrated by Timo Waarsenburg
The story in a nutshell: Beckman is a cadet-sergeant in the Dutch army as World War II breaks out. In the first months of 1940, the war already changes everything: he loses his little sister and sees his father be taken to the Scheveningen prison. Determined to fight the Germans from England, he tries to flee to Switzerland with his little brother. But fate dictates otherwise. They are caught and transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. There, on the foundations of the death, he falls in love. And because opportunities are scarce in the camp, he asks the girl to marry him right away. Will they ever see each other again?
Historian, writer and narrator Timo Waarsenburg (1972) interviewed Hans Beckman for different newspapers. The story never left him. In 2017, he made a narration of the story for the liberty festival in the Hague. Since then he performs throughout the country. He performs in theatres and occurs for schools.
