Cutting down a Christmas tree in a natural area

Saturday, December 6, 2025 Help nature and bring a Christmas tree home. After years of delays, Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) is giving you the opportunity to cut down your own pine tree in the Seetingsnollen near De Koog. Under supervision, you'll choose your own tree within the designated area and cut it down on the spot. Gloves and saws are provided; everyone is welcome. Why is this allowed? Young pines, especially Corsican pines, spread from the forest edge into the dunes. If you leave these trees standing, the open dune landscape will slowly close in. By cutting down a tree, you contribute to the preservation of this unique, open landscape with a high level of biodiversity. Think of species like mouse-ear, reindeer moss, three-colored dune pansy, dune roses, and even the rare roseate: they belong in the dunes. Please note: these trees are not "tightly pruned" Christmas trees from the garden center. The Corsican pine has longer needles in panicles at the ends of its branches – a little different, but still typical of Texel and good for the dunes. Location: Seetingsnollen, along Ruijslaan near the Maartenshuis, near Paadje van Schoo (see Staatsbosbeheer flags) - De Koog Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Admission: Free (maximum one pine tree per person)
