Lecture in 't Walvisvaarders Huisje

*Unfortunately this lecture cannot take place. Friday April 19, 2024 Annette de Wit, curator of the Maritime Museum, talks about the daily life of sailors' wives in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in 't Walvisvaarders Huisje. About the lecture: In numerous seafaring communities in the early modern Republic, women were in the majority. For most of the year, married women had to keep the family and household running alone and the dangers at sea also meant that there were relatively many widows. The income from shipping work was often low and irregular and insufficient for the family to live on. As a result, most sailors' wives worked and with that work they contributed significantly to the maritime economy. In addition, they also formed social and cultural pillars within the seafaring society. Please note: Lecture is given in Dutch. Time: 3:00 PM, duration 1 hour, Entrance: €5. Maximum 15 people. 't Walvisvaarders Huisje

't Walvisvaarders Huisje

't Walvisvaarders Huisje from the 18th century is located in the southernmost village, Den Hoorn. Real whalers lived in the house. Back in time We go back to the early 18th century. Klaas Jacobsz Daalder, who has sailed on long sea voyages since he was 10 years old, bought this house in 1729 and lived here with his wife and children. For sixty years this house would be inhabited by whalers. The special national monument is still inhabited and is furnished exactly as it was in the 18th century. You will see box beds, utensils and 18th century Harlinger tiles. There is a lot of information to be found about whaling. The cottage has a Zaans blue front room, an apple blossom pink back room and you can view the special fireplace in the kitchen. Tour Do you want to know how the whalers lived in the 18th century?
