Tuesday 15 August 2025 This summer, the Zomerkerk is organising surprising concerts performed by professional musicians. Also in De Burght in Den Burg, a concert will take place by duo Lyra-Way: Sofia Pedro (soprano) and Xander Baker (viola da gamba). At the European courts of the 17th century, the viola da gamba was an important and fashionable instrument. Much music was written for it, especially in France, England and Italy. Meanwhile, the lute was the king of instruments when it came to accompanying singers. However, when composers wanted to achieve a special effect, they chose a gamba. Lyra-Way, a duo for voice and viola da gamba, explores this less trodden path. Their new programme is based on two manuscripts - both from the early 17th century, one from Spain and one from England. Both are 'mixtapes' that select songs from those years, some still well-known and others ripe for rediscovery. The combination of the deeply moving and expressive voice, supported by the rich colours of the gamba, makes Lyra-Way's interpretation of this unique repertoire so convincing. Times: the concert starts at 20:15. Costs: admission is free. Please take into account a voluntary cash contribution afterwards; there is no PIN option.
