Culinary Wadden Weeks: tasting the Wadden

The entire Wadden area is brimming with fresh seafood and delicious food comes from the land too. Those delicacies get the starring role during the Culinary Wadden Weeks. On all the Wadden Islands, you can count on authentic Wadden gastronomy during this event. This year, no fewer than three Texel restaurants are taking part! Here's what to expect and how to enjoy the Culinaire Wadden Weeks.

Local ingredients

Participating restaurants have created a menu especially for the Culinary Wadden Weeks, which will take place from 21 October to 26 November 2023. This way, they let you taste delicious dishes whose ingredients are locally sourced. This is more sustainable, tasty and good for the entrepreneurs on Texel. Think of dishes with the salty taste of fish and shellfish, but also colourful and tasty field fruits and fruit. You can find it all on the Wadden, and during this culinary event it will be extra highlighted on your plate.

Participating restaurants

The ingredients grow in the restaurants' backyards. The chefs proudly show where they come from. On Texel, these three restaurants are participating:

  • Grand Hotel Opduin in De Koog is known for its Texel lamb and Fruits de mer dish from the Wadden Sea. The organic vegetable dishes are vegan or vegetarian and can be expanded with meat or fish. The Texel fries come with homemade sea lamb mayonnaise, sea buckthorn ketchup and Texel herb salt. You'll also enjoy the view here: the dunes and woods of the Dunes of Texel National Park.
  • Kook Atelier op Oost in Oosterend cooks creatively according to the seasons with extra attention to vegetables. The meat, fish, shellfish and crustaceans they serve are sustainable, responsible and from close by. They serve biodynamic and natural wines from lesser-known areas and make their own herbal infusions, kombucha and water kefir. The location is not wrong either: an authentic Texel farmhouse.
  • Restaurant Bij Jef in Den Hoorn is famous partly because of its Michelin star. Jef Schuur may draw his inspiration from home and abroad, but he cooks with Texel flavours. During the Culinary Wadden Weeks, he serves Texel lamb and seafood from the Wadden Sea and North Sea.
