Update: how is the spectacled duck on Texel doing now?

In early January 2025, it appeared on the east side of Texel: the very first spectacled duck ever seen in the Netherlands. A unique bird species, far from its natural habitat. From day one, it attracted birdwatchers and curious visitors to the island. Recently, birdwatchers noticed that the duck did not seem to be doing so well. On 28 December, it was picked up by Ecomare. How is it doing now?

Intensive care

Since the end of December, the spectacled duck has been cared for at Ecomare, after it was found in a weakened condition. The bird was found to be more than 40% underweight and infected with parasitic worms. At Ecomare, it is receiving the best possible care day and night: fluids, tube feeding, vitamins and deworming treatment. The effects of this treatment are yet to be seen. Despite some hopeful signs, its condition remains worrying and its recovery uncertain.

What is going on?

The probable cause of its condition is a combination of factors:

  • Incorrect diet: mainly beach crabs, which may contain parasites.
  • Parasites: including the spiny-nosed worm, which damages the organs.
  • Moulting: changing feathers takes a lot of energy for a bird.

What if he survives?

If the spectacled duck recovers, the question remains where it can go. Returning it to its natural habitat (the species lives in Alaska and the northern Bering Sea) is complex due to international regulations and the stress this would cause. Returning it to Texel is also risky, as it could eat the same disease-carrying crabs there again. Experts will be consulted to find the best solution for the animal's welfare.

Regular updates

The situation surrounding the spectacled duck is attracting a great deal of interest. Ecomare receives daily enquiries and expressions of support from all over the world. For this reason, a special update page has been created where people can provide the latest updates and donate to the care of this remarkable animal.
