On 31 October, Texel's new walking network was officially opened with a festive ceremony. Guests and hikers gathered at De Marel Nature Centre. Esther Rommel from the province of North Holland performed the official opening ceremony by unveiling a start panel. ‘Thanks to this network, hikers can now explore the island even better: at their own pace and with an eye for nature.’
This was followed by a walk through the Waalenburg nature reserve, during which participants were able to experience the new signage in practice. Singer Tim Knol provided musical accompaniment!
The new walking network consists of 250 kilometres of footpaths spread across Texel. The routes on the island are now all signposted with the same type of recognisable posts and signs. In addition, walkers can now easily put together their own route. Texel is now part of the North Holland Walking Network. For walkers, this means more freedom and clarity: short walks or long hikes, nature reserves or village routes, everything can be combined according to your own wishes.
The walking network was created through a collaboration between VVV Texel, Recreatie Noord-Holland, the Municipality of Texel, Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten, ANLV De Lieuw Texel and the Central Government Real Estate Agency on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. Various Texel entrepreneurs, tenants and farmers also support the network by welcoming walkers to their land.
A physical map or booklet with the walking routes will follow in the future. Until then, walkers can plan their routes digitally via the Wandelnetwerk Noord-Holland website and app (only available in Dutch). The routes in the Eilandroutes booklet (Dutch and German only) have already been updated with new route descriptions.
