De Slock, a popular café in the center of Den Burg, with an illustrious past. Home base for Texel residents and tourists. A characteristic brown pub that is still thriving can be found in the center of Den Burg on Texel. Café de Slock – open 365 days a year from 4:00 pm until closing – is one of those cafes where everyone feels at home without any pretensions. The old-fashioned "drink hour" still flourishes in which all layers of the Texel population – from painters to lawyers and from cutter fishermen to accountants – enjoy a pleasant evening in full harmony. In addition, the Slock has a wide range of specialty beers (more than 200 by the bottle) and with no fewer than 14 taps they have the most draft beers on Texel. They have also responded to the new trend by offering a wide choice of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beers. Due to the wide range of specialty beer, many tourists now know how to find their way to the café. Strange are these “oversiders” but for a short time. After a visit to the Slock, they often return, they melt together with the inhabitants of Texel and the pub feels like their own favorite pub elsewhere in the Netherlands. In the evenings, and especially at weekends, the old guard makes way for the young, who can go there until the late hours. In short, as regular guest and poet Theun de Winter puts it, De Slock is: The meeting place for young, old and grain genever”.
