You will find the Eiland Galerij on the Eierlandse Polder. It's the oldest arts exhibition space on the island of Texel.

Back in 1979, visual artist Niek Welboren decided to turn this former primary school in Zuid Eierland into an art gallery. He set to work himself to transform the building it into an 'island for art'. The gallery has become his life's work.

Today, Niek exhibits his paintings and the ceramic objects created by his partner Kerstin Edelmann in this stylishly restored building. Both artists are inspired by the elements that surround the island. The joint presentation of their works of art in the atmospheric ambiance of this listed building cannot be described as anything else but unique. Another special feature is the gallery's organically-formed sculpture garden, in which ceramic sculptures are displayed from the springtime of each year.

To the left of the entrance to the Eiland Galerij, visitors will not be able to miss a huge moai, "The Dreamer from Rapa Nui", a symbol of the connection that exists between Easter Island and Texel. The story behind the historic and cultural ties established between Texel and this island on the other side of the world is explained outside and visualised inside in the form of text and image.

Besides displaying island art, the Eiland Galerij also honour's this wonderful building's past: exhibits include a permanent exhibition of drawings from years gone by. The gallery's school history has been given pride of place in the 'Historic Classroom', where visitors will find themselves going back in time surrounded by old school desks and wall panels …

Opening hours:

from 10.30 to 17.00 hours, Wednesday to Sunday inclusive.

In the winter months, the gallery is open from 12.00 to 17.00 hours, on Saturday and Sunday.
However, it is also possible to arrange to view specific work outside opening hours.
