Smoking and open-fire ban

5 August 2026

Due to the ongoing drought and hot weather, there is an increased risk of wildfires. A ban on smoking and lighting fires is therefore currently in force in woodland, dune and heathland areas on Texel.

Phase 2

As in the rest of the Netherlands, Phase 2 is currently in force. There have also been (small) wildfires on Texel recently. In woodland, dune and heathland areas, smoking is prohibited within a distance of thirty metres of these areas. Lighting fires is also prohibited. This ban also applies to areas in the woodland where barbecuing is normally permitted.

Be careful at home too

A single smouldering cigarette butt is currently enough to cause a major wildfire. You should therefore take extra care with barbecues, fire pits, campfires and the like, whether at home or at your holiday home. Do not park your car in tall, dry grass and dispose of rubbish (especially glass) in the designated bins.

What should you do if there is a wildfire?

  • Do not wait for help. Flee as quickly and as far away from the fire as possible, heading for a public road if possible.
  • Do not walk ahead of the fire or in the direction it is spreading, but at right angles to it. This reduces the chance of the fire catching up with you.
  • Help other people and children to reach a safe place.
  • Call 112 to report the location of the fire as accurately as possible.
