On Sunday evening, Dorian van Rijsselberghe once again showed the world that he is the best in the RS:X class.
Just like at the Olympic Games in London, Dorian once again out-surfed the competition in Rio de Janeiro. In doing so, the man from Texel becomes the first windsurfer in history to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals. That he would be crowned Olympic champion again was already known before the final medal race on Sunday. However, he managed to cross the finishing line first on Sunday, too, which was the icing on the cake.
Texel Born and bred, Dorian is obviously hugely popular on his native island. Family, friends and acquaintances: the whole of Texel was behind him. On Sunday evening, there was even a real surf-in cinema. On ‘Dorian’s beach’ at Paal 17, you could watch the final on the big screen from your surfboard. Extra special were the words of thanks from Dorian to Texel and everyone who had supported him on his road to the Games.
The morning after the big success, Texel is still celebrating its champion. Everywhere you go, people praise Dorian’s achievement and you can even get gold cream slices on the island. On his return to Texel, Dorian will, of course, be welcomed and honoured with festive cheer.
