Texel is an island of space, tranquillity and nature – but also of refined flavours and exceptional local products. Those seeking culinary excellence should not overlook two exceptional restaurants: Bij Jef in Den Hoorn and Op Oost in Oosterend. Both restaurants have been awarded a star. Bij Jef received a Michelin star and Op Oost a Green Michelin star.
Jef Schuur has been cooking at the highest level in Den Hoorn for years. His restaurant Bij Jef, which he runs together with hostess and sommelier Nadine Mögling, has a Michelin star and is known for its refined menus with local influences. Ingredients from the island are creatively incorporated into surprising combinations. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service sharp, and the wine selection perfectly balanced with the food. Bij Jef is the only restaurant on a Wadden Island with a Michelin star.
‘Tell your guests your story. Also – and especially – at the table. Otherwise, guests won't fully appreciate the beauty of what you serve.’ – Jef Schuur
On the Waddendijk, in an old farmhouse in Oosterend, you will find Restaurant het Kook Atelier van Op Oost. Chef Joram Timmerman works with whatever the island and nature have to offer at that moment. Don't expect a fixed menu, but do expect lots of vegetables, wild herbs and pure flavours. Op Oost was awarded a Green Michelin star, a recognition for sustainable gastronomy.
‘I think most inspiration comes from nature itself; in the kitchen, all we really have to do is translate it onto a plate.’ - Joram Timmerman
A Green Michelin star is awarded to restaurants that are leaders in sustainability, such as Kook Atelier Op Oost.
Would you like to make a reservation at one of these restaurants? We recommend booking well in advance – tables are in high demand. You will enjoy a unique combination of craftsmanship, island products and genuine attention.
