In the Schettersweid area in De Dennen, you cycle along a three-meter-wide cycle path that runs partly over the water. The cycle path is a total of 1.7 kilometers long and runs from Grensweg to Botgrasweg. The cycle bridge starts at Ploeglanderweg.

Construction of the cycle bridge

The cycle bridge was constructed in 2024. The old cycle path through Schettersweid was in poor condition but was located within a Natura 2000 area. Modification of the cycle path was therefore only possible in combination with nature development projects by Staatsbosbeheer, where nature restoration took place simultaneously.

More space for special plants

Thanks to the modifications, more fresh water is retained in De Dennen. In this way, the nature reserve helps mitigate the effects of climate change, such as drought and flooding. The open area created after the removal of the old cycle path has been designed as a robust nature reserve. Species such as the broad-leaved orchid and spotted orchid have better chances here, as do rare plants like marsh loosestrife, sundew, and marsh cinquefoil.

The cycle path has been partially relocated to the edge of the area. From the path, you look out over Schettersweid, where water is retained and wet grassland has developed. Thus, during your bike ride, you see not only the forest of De Dennen but also the open and water-rich landscape of Schettersweid.
