Do you like long walks through untouched nature? Long-distance hikers can indulge themselves on Texel with several routes. Enjoy the dunes, the forest and the beach or discover the Wadden side of Texel. You can literally go in any direction here! We are happy to list the options for long-distance walks on Texel for you.
A number of walks named Waddenwandelen or “mud-flat walks” have been set out around the Waddenzee World Heritage Site. The paths run for a total of 1,200 kilometres along the wadden coast of Noord-Holland, Friesland and Groningen, including the Wadden Islands (also known as the West Frisian Islands). The walks on Texel are two day-long hikes of approximately 20 kilometres:
The Texel Waddenwandel paths are described in detail in the booklet Wandelroutes over zes Waddeneilanden. Order directly.
The Noord-Holland path is a long-distance walk through the “inlands” of Texel to Het Gooi. Its well signposted and extremely varied route runs for 270 km along winding dykes and straight stretches of canal, through farmland, down rough tracks and over wooden stiles. The Texel leg consists of a southern path and a northern path, both about 17 km. The walk starts at the Texel ferry dock and leads to the lighthouse. An information sign at the dock marks the path. The cable ferry across the Eierlands Canal does not operate in January, but the diversion is signposted as necessary.
The booklet Banjeren door de binnenlanden van Noord-Holland contains a description of the whole path. Order directly.
An unusual way of exploring Texel’s countryside is this 3-day hike, with overnight stops in De Koog and De Cocksdorp. The walk takes you through charming wildlife areas, dunes, beaches, woods and meadows, with plenty of things to do, including a visit to Ecomare and climbing the lighthouse. Book now.
