The breeding season begins

Texel at its best: lambs in the meadows, quiet beaches and increasingly green dune grass. Spring is just around the corner! This period is also breeding season, which means that some of the walking trails are closed. Fortunately, there are still plenty of options for wonderful walks, from beaches to forest trails and from dune paths to village walks. Read on for our tips.

Green routes closed from 1 March

From 1 March, the green routes will be closed. These are the paths that are marked in green and white on the map of Texel. Examples include the path through the Mandenvallei or the path behind the Geulplas. By closing these paths from 1 March to 1 September (sometimes 1 or 15 August), Texel is helping to ensure a successful breeding season and giving birds and other animals the peace and space they need.

Walking via the new walking network

The easiest way to enjoy beautiful walks during the breeding season is to walk via the new walking network. This allows you to create your own route using junctions. For example, you can choose a starting point and follow the arrows from there, or plan a route using the app. This makes it easy to avoid the green paths.

The beach is always a good idea

Space, sea views and a lovely breeze. On the beach, you can walk for as long as you like. Texel has no less than 30 kilometres of beach! You can often combine the best of all worlds: beach, dunes and forest in one walk. Locally, you may encounter barriers to protect breeding grounds. By taking a small detour, you can help nature.

Village walks and historical routes

Want to be sure you can walk in peace without any surprises along the way? Then opt for village walks or routes with a cultural-historical touch. Consider our Historical Walks or the City Walk through Den Burg.

National Park during the breeding season

Duinen van Texel National Park is also a wonderful place to walk during the breeding season, as long as you follow the marked paths and respect the quiet areas. If you are walking your dog, please note that different rules apply during the breeding season (such as keeping your dog on a leash in certain areas). The rules are clearly explained at the entrances to the areas.
