Texel is at its best during Aprill and May: you’ve got the peace and space of the beach, the cheerful atmosphere of spring and a calendar full of fun outings. With King’s Day, the Meierblis, markets and exhibitions, there’s something different to do every day.
King’s Day is one of the festive highlights of the year on Texel. On Monday 27 April, the Koningsparkty takes place in the park in Den Burg. Here you can enjoy live music, food and drinks. The after-party is at Café De Slock. Of course, you can also visit the flea markets in the various villages.
Be sure to add the Meierblis to your diary. On Thursday 30 April, the arrival of spring is celebrated on Texel with bonfires. There are public Meierblis events in the various villages. This is your chance to experience a Texel tradition that is truly part of spring on the island.
The Spring Market in Den Burg and the Spring Market at the Maartenhuis near De Koog bring colour, conviviality and springtime bustle. On Wednesday 29 April, you’ll find stalls, music, children’s entertainment and plenty of flowers in the centre of Den Burg, whilst at the Maartenhuis you can browse products from the workshops, vegetable garden and farm.
If you’re looking for something fun to do together, the Parent-Child Discovery Trail in the nature garden at Natuur Goed is a great tip. In Oosterend, armed with a route booklet and tasks, you’ll set off together through the edible nature garden, with the emphasis on looking, discovering and learning together.
Looking for an indoor activity? Then visit an exhibition! At this time of year, you can visit the ‘IJsvogel’ exhibition at Galerie Posthuys, featuring paintings, prints, ceramic and bronze sculptures, and the ‘Lentekriebeling’ exhibition in Den Burg, which focuses on the blossoming of spring.
Texel is a wonderful island to explore by bike. You’ll cycle past dunes, villages, meadows and the beach, and along the way you can easily stop for a drink on a terrace or a short walk. If you want to be sure of a bike during your holiday, book one in advance.
For a quieter moment with a cultural twist, the Wool Cathedral is a special tip. In Oosterend, you can see this large artwork made up of 48 panels of island sheep’s wool, created through a collaboration between hundreds of Texel residents and visitors.
Fancy a nice drink? Join the Texel Beer Tour! During this tour, you’ll visit three local breweries, learn about the brewing process, taste various Texel beers and even take four Texel beers home with you afterwards.
Book your holiday on Texel in good time. As the weather is often lovely and there’s plenty to do, this period is very popular. Choose your favourite outings, add the beach to your itinerary and make it a spring week full of relaxation, fun and authentic Texel moments.
