New fishing monument unveiled in Oudeschild

On 25 April, a new fishing monument was unveiled in the harbour of Oudeschild by the initiator, Fred Wiering – himself a cutter fisherman for many years – and the former crew of the TX 3.

Railing and centreboard

The new monument consists of a section of railing from the TX 3 (Biem-Jan) and a replica of the centreboard from the TX 11, modelled on the original at Museum Kaap Skil. Next to the monument are panels providing information about Texel’s fishing industry. By scanning the QR code on the panels, you can view all the texts, photos and translations online as well.

A second memorial

The new monument stands next to the one erected in 2023: the bench in the stern of the TX 29 Helena Elizabeth. Together, following the recent redevelopment, the monuments serve as a reminder of the fishing industry, which was once so important to the island.

Take a look around Oudeschild

The monuments are located in the harbour of Oudeschild, close to the harbour office. You can find the location on the map here. Would you like to hear more stories about shipping, fishing and maritime history? Then pop along to the Kaap Skil Museum, just a short distance away.
