Tips for the Ascension Day weekend

There’s plenty to choose from on Texel over the Ascension weekend. Head to the lively BUTE or find inspiration at the Uitmarkt BuitenGewoon Texel, pop into an exhibition, explore Waalenburg or simply seek some peace and quiet.

Start with the Uitmarkt

If you arrive on Texel on Thursday, the Uitmarkt BuitenGewoon Texel is a great way to kick things off. Music, art and culture come together in Den Burg. With performances by choirs and musicians, an art and culture market, and a tasty treat from one of the food trucks, accompanied by Texel beer.

Head to BUTE on Saturday

BUTE is all about being outdoors, browsing stalls, grabbing a bite to eat and experiencing all sorts of things along the way. On the grounds of De Bonte Belevenis, there are performances, food trucks and children’s activities, and the Lions Auction is also part of the programme. Great if you’re out and about with children, but also if you simply fancy a relaxed afternoon.

Discover Texel art

If you love art, be sure to pop into the exhibition ‘Gert-Jan Veenstra paints Texel’ at Galerie Posthuys. A new collection of Texel landscapes is on display there. ‘Art on Texel 2026’ is also running during this period, featuring art trails taking in galleries, exhibitions, museums and studios across different parts of the island.

Visit Waalenburg

If you want to experience spring on Texel, the ‘Orchids and Meadow Birds in Waalenburg’ excursion is a great suggestion. Many meadow birds, including black-tailed godwits, breed in this nature reserve, and wild orchids are in bloom at this time of year.

Unwind in the sauna

An Ascension weekend doesn’t have to be packed to the brim. On Texel in particular, it’s lovely to alternate a busy day with a quiet moment, for example in the private sauna in the fruit orchard at De Waeldernis. No rush, no distractions – just you, the sauna, the chirping birds and the buzzing bees. Don’t forget to book.

Stroll through the markets

If you’re staying a little longer, you can also visit various markets. In De Cocksdorp, you can stroll through the Durpermarkt on Saturdays. In De Koog, there’s a Sunday market, and on Monday mornings there’s a weekly market in Den Burg. Finally, on Mondays you can head to the flea market in Den Hoorn.

More fun things to do at the weekend

Got some spare time? Then be sure to have a look at our events calendar. There’s so much to do! It’s precisely the combination of nature, culture and relaxing outings that makes this weekend on the island so enjoyable.
