About the artists

Pieternel Geurtz

Pieternel is a sociologist, holds a Master’s degree in Art & Visual Design/Education, and is the mother of two sons. She was born in 1956 in Brabant, studied in Den Bosch, Utrecht and Amsterdam, and settled on Texel in 1984. From 1984 to 2010, she taught art and CKV at OSG De Hogeberg.

Creativity has been the central theme of her life from an early age. Drawing and painting took on an important role early on, after which she developed her skills in a variety of disciplines. After obtaining her teaching qualification in art, she worked on various commissions, ranging from drawings, paintings and photography to graphic design, 3D work and tapestries.

Music also plays an important role in her artistic life. Since 1985, Pieternel has been active in various bands, where she has been involved in singing, guitar, bass guitar and composition. Since leaving teaching, she has had more time for her own artistic practice. She also enjoys giving workshops to small groups and individuals, often centred around a specific theme or material, or as guidance for young people preparing for a creative course.

In the years that followed, she also worked on larger personal projects, including Boris Dagboek, a trilogy she conceived, wrote and designed from the perspective of her small, brave and headstrong tortoise, Boris.

Galerie Texel Woodart

WoodArt on Texel revolves around the craftsmanship and vision of wood artist and designer Piet de Bruin. His work has found a permanent home at Galerie Texel Woodart in Midden-Eierland: a gallery that officially opened on 29 December 2019 and presents itself as the first on Texel where wooden products are made entirely by hand and exhibited.

De Bruin grew up near the Spanderswoud, where his love for flora, fauna, trees and types of wood developed at an early age. As a self-taught craftsman, he has developed over the years into a master who first shapes his sculptures, lamps and garden benches with a chainsaw and then refines them into unique works of art using a variety of tools.

Together with his wife Lia de Bruin, who is responsible for PR and sales within the gallery, he has built WoodArt into a venue with a distinct identity of its own. This combination of artistic craftsmanship and collaboration has earned the gallery a solid reputation in recent years and has already attracted thousands of visitors. Piet de Bruin also works extensively on commission, enabling personal wishes to be translated into a unique wooden artwork.
